Beer Styles:

Pale Ale – Generally gold or copper in color, dry, and with a crisp hop flavor. Common varieties include American Pale Ale, English Pale Ale, Belgian Pale Ale, and Imperial Pale Ale.

India Pale Ale (IPA) – A pale ale with a slightly higher alcohol content and intense hop flavor and aroma. Common varieties include Black IPA, Belgian IPA, Session IPA, and White IPA.

Brown Ale – Characterized by a strong malty center, medium body, and brown color. Brown ales can be nutty, sweet, and lightly hopped and are a distinctively northern English style. Common varieties include Honey Brown, English Brown, and Imperial Brown.

Stout – Thick, black, rich, and opaque, stouts get most of their color and flavor from roasted barley. They often contain little to no hop flavor or aroma. Common varieties include Sweet Stout, Irish Stout, Oatmeal Stout, and Dry Stout.

Porter – Very similar to a stout, but largely made from unroasted barley. Traditionally dark brown and sweet, with hints of chocolate and sometimes a sharp bitterness. Common varieties include Coffee Porter, Vanilla Porter, Robust Porter, and Smoked Porter.

Wheat – Hazy and cloudy, wheat beers are often unfiltered and contain yeast sediment in the bottle. Full-flavored, light in color, and brewed with unique yeast strains to produce flavors like banana, clove, and vanilla. Common varieties include Hefeweizen, American Wheat, and Witbier.

Amber/Red Lager – Usually amber to copper in color and maltier and darker than most lagers. Flavor profiles vary considerably from one brewery to the next, but bitterness is generally low. Common varieties include Irish Red and American Amber.

Pilsner – First conceived in Czechoslovakia and easily the world's most popular beer style. Characterized by a pale straw color, medium body, and more hops than a traditional lager. Smooth and clean. Common varieties include Continental Pilsner, Imperial Pilsner, and German Pilsener.

Bock – A stronger lager with heavy malt, medium to full body, lightly hopped, and dark amber to brown in color. German in origin and often brewed in the fall to be enjoyed in the winter or spring. Common varieties include Doppelbock, Eisbock, and Maibock.

Oktoberfest – Characterized by a toasted quality, robust malt flavors, a deep amber hue, and a slight sweetness. Often brewed in the spring to be drank in autumn. Oktoberfest is a style unto itself.

Munich Helles – Similar to a Czech Pilsner but a little more malty, with lighter hops that are more in balance with the malts. A unique style.

Saison – Also known as a Farmhouse Ale, Saisons are a very complex style characterized by earthy yeast tones, mild to moderate tartness, lots of spice, and medium bitterness. They tend to be semi-dry and are traditionally brewed in the winter, to be consumed throughout the summer months. Common varieties include Belgian Saison, and various fruit Saisons.

Kolsch – Very pale in color with a light to medium body. Hop bitterness is medium to slightly assertive with a dry flavor making up the rest. A unique style.


Other Styles:

Braggot - Also called bracket or brackett. Originally brewed with honey and hops, later with honey and malt—with or without hops added.

Mead - An alcoholic drink made from fermented honey and water.

Melomel - A mead that contains fruit, such as raspberry, blackberry, or strawberry.

American Light - This recipe uses the traditional combination of pilsner malt, rice and corn adjuncts. It is light-bodied, refreshing and thirst quenching. American Pale Ale - Perhaps the most widely brewed American style ale. Moderately strong hop aroma and bitterness. American Pale Wheat - This is an easy drinking ale blending the styles of pale ale and wheat beer. The malt bill is based on wheat extract and flaked red wheat and will provide a light copper color and ample head retention. American Pale Wheats are hoppier than traditional wheat beers and American Cluster and Liberty hops lend a moderate hoppiness. BRY-97 yeast ferments a clean, ale flavor profile without the banana and clove phenols that its German counterpart has. Kolsch - Kölsch is a crisp, clean, easy-drinking ale. It has a straw-yellow hue similar to a pilsner, but is less hoppy, a bit sweeter and uses pale malts and a small amount of wheat. Pumpkin Spice Porter (Autumn Seasonal) - This seasonal release autumn ale is the perfect companion to the changing seasons - from harvest to the holidays! The recipe starts with Briess CBW® Porter base extract partenered with Caramel 90L, Carabrown®and dark chocolate steeping grains. To spice things up we added cinnimon, allspice and a hint of ginger. White IPA - We’ve brought together the flavors of a Belgian Witbier and an American IPA.
